How to avoid 0870 numbers and anything beginning with "08"

If you are tired of being funnelled down an 0870 or 0845 number every time you call your bank, electricity or gas provider, read on.

In our last article, we discussed computer viruses and this topic follows on nicely.

The new social virus that seems to be spreading like a forest fire out of control across the UK is the use of telephone numbers starting with "0870", or indeed anything prefixed with "08".

Let’s get straight to the point - what does this mean in reality?

An 0870 number costs between 1.5 pence and 8 pence per minute to ring. Similarly, but more expensive are 0871 numbers which cost more - between 2 pence per minute and 10 pence per minute. Other 08 numbers charge even more to ring, and the problem is this – how do you know which number costs what?

It's a numbers game

Unless you have a tariff board pinned to your desk or wall, who on earth actually really knows the cost of these numbers when you dial them? Companies from small through the multi-nationals now use these “non-geographical” monstrous numbers and it is costing you money to call them.

Whoever your telephone company is, whether it is Tiscali, Virgin – or even BT – you should know that many of these companies hardly ever include the cost of dialling 08 numbers in their “free calls” packages.

The Real Cost

Just to give you an idea of the sort of prices you will pay for these pointless numbers, we have provided a short list below:

Prefix Cost
0845 3.36ppm - 0ppm
0844 1ppm - 0.5ppm
0844 3ppm - 0ppm
0844 4ppm - 0.5ppm
0844 5ppm - 1ppm
0870 8ppm - 1.5ppm
0871 10ppm - 2ppm

You might be asking yourself why companies are charging their customer to ring to change their car insurance details, check their bank balance or get a quote on a boiler repair – why do companies use these 08 numbers?

The simple answer is this - to subsidise and\or pay for the ever-growing call centres that are springing up everywhere. As costs are being driven down by ever-increasing competition, they feel the right way forward is to redirect your call to a call-centre.

Ask yourself this; if you were looking for a tradesperson or to switch telephone call deals, what would you rather call – a "local", geographical number for which you do not pay to call - or an 08 number? I feel many companies are missing a trick here.

Go one step further and think about freephone numbers. How much more willing would you be to call a freephone number for a car insurance quote when you are shopping around? I don’t know about you, but I would always call the 0800 first.

So, what can you do ?

Quite simply, don't call them. Say no to 08 numbers and being ripped off by these national, "local" and premium-rate numbers.

You can find the GEOGRAPHICAL number of the company you are trying to find at this website:http://www.saynoto0870.com - you will find most companies there; happy hunting!
